Found it-

The name of the site I was thinking about that provided a visual context for movies & music is Live Plasma (liveplasma.com). In reviewing my <a href="http://libtechbytes.blogspot.com/2005/12/connecting-dots.html" rel="nofollow"> blog notes </a>, I also found another visual experiment by CNet called the <a href="http://news.com.com/The+Big+Picture/2030-12_3-5843390.html?tag=st.bp" rel="nofollow">Big Picture </a>.

It is iteresting to see this type technology being used all over the place and it makes sense - visual cues do help in searching and learning especially for people like me. :)

I will not be at the meeting on Thursday. I have a conflict with another new program at PLCMC and I have an obligation to attend that one. But I also want to brag that I have recently set up a video chat group with everyone in my family. I have sisters in Pittsburgh, Anchorage and my mother is in Florida. We now all have web cams at each home and are video calling each other using either MSN Messenger or Microsoft Live Messenger (I think that is what it is called) which is the latest version.

Quality is great. The only problem we are having is that the audio drops out sometimes. The only way to get it back is to hang up and reconnect.

So now instead of just getting together a couple of times a year, we see each other face to face for conversation several times a week.

Last Friday, my mother in law in Charlotte and my mother (both solid 80 somethings) had their first video chat!!

final thought for the moment: anyone who has interest in Second Life should take the time to read the novel "Snow Crash" by Neal Stevenson. Large parts of it take place in a worldwide networked virtual reality environment similar to Second Life. The novel was written in 1994, but a lot of its predictions have come true.

A thought about socially networked catalogues.

At the moment, PLCMC already has a website for reviewing books, namely Reader's Club. The Reader's Club pages are already set up to take comments about existing books and submit reviews of new books (albeit through a comment form rather than a ratings system or instant comment setup), and they already link back to the library catalogue. Would it be possible to allow the social networking of our catalogue simply by reciprocating this linking? If a title has been reviewed on Reader's Club, the bibliographic record should ideally link to the review, or even better display the review on the page.

Just thinking of ways we could expand what the library can do by pooling the resources we have. If the library already has a thriving site like Reader's Club, it makes sense to use it as a base point for socially networking the catalog.

(this is Ian, by the way)

I've been taking a look at the pathfinder wiki at http://www.libraryforlife.org/subjectguides/

It's an interesting and intriguing idea, but I can't help thinking it's limited itself by only letting staff edit it. This is the kind of thing that could spawn a socially networked catalogue if they let it, but that can only happen with user input.

I just spent some time looking over Ann Arbor's new homepage. It is impressive -- very "clean" in design and esay to use. I especially liked the book review catagories and the way they are grouped and listed; for example, beach reads, dogs, keeping up with changes in Washington, etc. The title mix was interesting and the short summaries made many of the items seem appealing.
